 Music and Rituals

I have always grown up around music and one of the main reasons music is such a big part of my life to this day is because of the way I grew up and who I was around. I was fortunate enough to grow up in a loving household, where I would attend church every Sunday morning. As I got older and older I grew to love gospel music and the choir and eventually I told my grandma I wanted to be apart of it, My grandmother obviously obliged, so every Sunday after that I was in the choir, I remember we would rehearse every Wednesday for the next Sunday and I can recall one of my favorite songs that I still have on my playlist today. And that song is, "In The Sweet By And By" By Joseph webster.

I grew up going to a very southern Baptist church and this was usually the type of style of music that we would sing in the choir every Sunday, I can recall having a solo in this song years ago at one of my churches revivals years ago, I remember being so happy. What people actually don't know is that there is so many versions of this song that if you hear it once in one version, and you hear it again it can actually sound totally different to the one you heard before.

Another big song that I really loved was, "Did I mention" By Kyla Faye Morgan. The reason this song has such a special place in my heart is because this song was the first ever song I sang in the choir, and it was also my Grandma's favorite song.  But I would say the reason this is also one of my favorite songs ever is because I ended up singing the same exact song at my grandmothers funeral back in 2019 so I guess you can say it was kind of a full circle moment.

  3. Hey Gabe, it sounds like we went to very similar churches growing up. I love the song "Did I Mention" so much and I remember a group in my church growing up performing it, it was one of the few performances there that ended up shared on the internet, (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cSROuzsYqJE). It's hard not to hear how moved the congregation is during this.:)

  4. Hey Gabe, the music in my church growing up was always like this too. The songs every weekend would always be the same but I remember them to this day even if I don't go nowadays. The Sunday morning music is too relatable.

  5. Hey Gabe, I really like your blog and how you talked about the music growing up in a church. I experienced the same thing and I was never on a choir but I bet you had fun.
